A Sign of Affection Review

A Sign of Affection is a romance anime that moves at a slightly faster pace than most, with the two main characters officially getting together about halfway through the first season. At first, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t completely sold on the male lead. He initially came off as a bit of a red flag to me. His strong interest in sign language and frequent comments like “I’ve never met someone like her” or “I want to learn more” made it feel, at least early on, like he might be using her curiosity as entertainment while she fell for him wholeheartedly.

That initial impression, however, slowly changed as the story unfolded.

As the anime progresses, it becomes clear that his interest goes far beyond sign language itself. His feelings for her grow naturally, and what once felt questionable turns into something genuine and patient. He begins to feel less like a red flag and more like a green one, someone willing to move at her pace, learn with intention, and respect her world rather than take from it. I also appreciated the reminder this anime gives: not everyone is out to gain something from another person, and sometimes curiosity really does come from care.

This story isn’t just about a deaf girl finding love, either. While that aspect is beautifully handled—and refreshingly different from the usual romance tropes, the anime also explores multiple relationships forming alongside the main couple. These secondary connections add depth and realism, making the world feel lived-in rather than centered on just one romance.

There is a subtle love-triangle element introduced, and while it isn’t fully resolved within the anime, it left me genuinely curious about how things play out in the manga. That alone tells me the story did its job, I want to keep going.

One element I found interesting, though slightly hard to connect with, was the recurring metaphor comparing love to snow. I can understand the intention, love as something new, delicate, and beautiful, but snow can also be cold, harsh, and fleeting. Personally, I see love more like spring: warmth returning, color blooming, and new growth taking root. That said, interpretations of love will always differ, and the way the anime expresses these emotions is still undeniably poetic.

Overall, A Sign of Affection is heartfelt, tender, and genuinely charming. Yes, there are a few cringe-worthy moments, but let’s be real, no romance anime is complete without at least one.

⭐ Final Rating: 9/10

A beautiful, emotionally rich romance with a fresh perspective and a lot of heart.
